Aging and the Habits of the Heart
March 7-8, 2024

Today, when a pandemic and its legacy have changed our world and our lives, many of us – old and young – confront a lingering, pervasive sense of loss coupled with uncertainty in the face of social change and an erosion of traditions that have often bound us together. In a provocative combination of lectures, seminars, conversations and cultural insights, the 2024 Symposium On Aging asks:

  • How have we, over a lifetime, come to think of ourselves as the persons we believe we are,
  • How can we find a center of stillness in the midst of restlessness that makes creative life possible and the inescapability of aging a blessing,
  • How do deeply ingrained habits of the heart continue to guide us?

Saint John’s On The Lake invites aging services professionals, concerned members of the community and older adults to attend the 2024 Symposium on Aging: Aging and the Habits of the Heart. The Symposium is an opportunity to share ideas, research outcomes and lessons learned to strengthen resilience and celebrate aging. Register in whole or in part for this two-day, no-cost event and earn Continuing Education Hours (CEHs).

About the 2024 Symposium Art

This year’s Symposium Art (sans the heart thread) is a fabric and acrylic painting entitled “Bright Red Needs To Be Fed” created by Pat G., a Saint John’s Resident, during a session of our Opening Minds through Art (OMA) program.

The Saint John’s OMA program is modeled after the award-winning, evidence-based, intergenerational art-making program for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of neurocognitive disorders. The program provides creative self-expression and social engagement, while creating an opportunity for volunteers to improve their attitude toward aging through weekly interaction with program participants.
